Jane Goody dies of Cancer - RIP

It is a frightening sight to see a young person be struck down with Cancer. The world has watched recently as Jane Goody succumbed to this terrible and devastating illness. Our prayers are with her family and children and all those suffering from Cancer all over the globe.

Over 1 million people are diagnosed with Cancer every year(In the USA)

An estimated 80 million people have health insurance insufficient to cover the costs of a catastrophic illness such as cancer.

Since 1949, the overall cancer incidence has increased by 44 percent; the incidence of breast cancer and male colon cancer by about 60 percent; testis, prostate and kidney by 100 percent; and other cancers, such as malignant melanoma, multiple myeloma and some lymphomas, by over 100 percent.

The estimated annual cost of cancer to the United States, excluding incalculable psychosocial costs, is $110 billion, approximately two percent of the GNP.

Annual production rates for synthetic, carcinogenic and other industrial chemicals exploded from 1 billion pounds in 1940 to more than 500 billion pounds annually during the 1980s.

Recent National Cancer Institute studies have linked: non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and exposure to solvents, oils, and greases; elevated risks for multiple myelorna among men and women employed in the textile and plastic industries; lymphoma among laboratory workers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture; and lung cancer among workers who developed silicosis.

The rates of certain types of cancer among some industrial workers are up to 10 times higher than in the general population. Children of workers handling chemical carcinogens have sharply increase cancer rates. For example, the risks of childhood leukemia are increased two-to-five-fold if, during their mother's pregnancies, their fathers worked with spray paints, dyes or pigments.

Some 75 percent of all cancers develop in those over 55, but notable exceptions include childhood leukemia, testicular and brain cancers - which mainly strike young people and have been increasing at an alarming rate, particularly among peak age groups For example, there has been an approximate 300 percent increase in testicular cancer among those aged 25-34 since the 1950s.

During the 1990s, nearly 2 million women will have been diagnosed with breast cancer and 460,000 will have died. Between 1950 and 1989, the incidence of breast cancer increased by 53 percent.

There has been an approximate doubling in. lung cancer rates in recent decades among non- smokers. A wide range of occupational exposures and urban air pollution have been shown to cause lung cancer.

Art give someone freedom to create a reality they can accept. Sometimes, reality is unacceptable, it is raw, it is harsh, it is cruel. Art is welcoming, enlightening and loving.

CANCER PATIENCE – WAITING LISTS - SURVIVAL RATES INCREASE

Nobody should have to wait to find out if they have Cancer or not. All waiting achieves is to increase the chance of the cancer spreading and the expense of the treatment. Waiting lists for Cancer needs to be exterminated – it makes no sense. Read an Article from The Daily Telegraph about the success of treating Lung Cancer when caught early. The UK Cancer survival Rate is the lowest in Europe? is it because the medical profession has learnt that catching and diagnosing Cancer is the best and perhaps most effective way of Cancer Treatment. Chemotherapy and all forms of Cancer Treatment are more effective when an early detection is made.

Cancer kills 20,000 people every 24 hours. This is a frightening, out of control statistic that should not be a reality. When one thinks of all the treatment, from Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, Surgery – and all the warnings - to think this disease takes more than 7 Million lives every year, it is such a shame. FIGHTING CANCER – THE FEELING WITHIN

The National Cancer Institute is a Federally Funded agency responsible for various research programs, financing of centres, public information and funds a whole host of programs related to Cancer Research, Cancer Prevention and Treatment. It was founded in 1937 – and since then it has been battling this deadly illness.

Amongst hundreds of other grants that are given out by the National Cancer Institute, the Radiological Physics Center (RPC) in Houston, Texas and the Quality Assurance Review Center (QARC) in Providence, Rhode Island are financed each year to carry out their work. Thyroid Cancer is a Cancer that forms in a gland called The Thyroid Gland. This is a tiny organ located at the base of the Throat. It functions to make hormones that control body temperatuee, blood pressure and even the heart rate. There are many types of Thyroid Cancer, two being Papillary and Medullary. WHAT DOES ASYMPTOMOATIC MEAN WITH A SIMPLE PIECE OF WRITING

This is quite a simply poem, that is anything but complicated. Written over 100 years ago my Ann Lowell - who was a brilliant poet with a mind for picking up the simple things in life.

On a completely different subject. Do you know what Asymptomatic means? Many Cancers develop without ever showing any signs or symptoms, especially at the early stages of the disease. This is why regular check-ups for Cancer, Mammograms, Colonoscopies can help to find Early Cancer before the actual symptoms of Cancer start to appear. This makes the chances of Successful Cancer Treatment and a better chance of recovery. There was no sign or warning
No writing on the wall
A day like any other …
When cancer came to call

It grew inside your body
A tumour, starting small
In time the doctor told you
That cancer came to call

I fight against the knowing
“It can’t be true,” I bawl
But I can’t mend you, though I try
For cancer came to call

The things I thought were certain
Seen in my “crystal ball”
Now lay, hopes dashed and broken

One has often heard the term Melanoma, especially since John Mcain ran for president and the issue of Skin Cancer and Melanoma kept cropping up. John McCain is a survivor of many things and one is Melanoma, a form of cancer that begins with Melanocytes(Cell that make pigment Melanin). It sometimes, but not always begins as a Mole – skin Melanoma – but can also start in other pigmented areas. There are over 60,000 new cases of Melanoma each year in the USA - with about 8,400 deaths. Melanoma is a very aggressive form of skin Cancer – for more information please go to the Melanoma Information Page of the National Cancer Institute.

Sickness, especially Cancer can take away our hope and leave us depressed and feeling low. This poem, written by the one and only Oscar Wilde, expresses the hope in life itself, even when Cancer or Sickness has hold of us. He points out the yellow buttercup, the nature surrounding him, the sense that all is at peace. Cancer tries to take ones peace, it forces one to think of sickness, hospitals and hopelessness. In many ways we must always remember that all any of us have is the here and now - and nature is the best way to remember that.

EXTREMELY RARE FORMS OF CANCER - HEART CANCER

It may shock or surpise people that there is such a Cancer as Heart Cancer. Heart Cancer is very, very rare and thankfully, most cases are benign. Other forms of Cancer can indirectly effect the Heart, and even some forms of Treatment can take its toll on the heart valves and muscles, but Heart Cancer itself is very, very, rare. TREATMENTS FOR METASTATIC CANCER - INFORMATION
Treatment is generally determined by how a cancer has spread, or indeed, if it has spread at all. If it has sppread to other parts of the body, it may decrease the patients chance of recovery, But this is not always the case. Radiosurgery; chemotherapy and hormone therapy are just some of the ways of treating it. Metastatic Cancer can rarely be cured, although some tumors like Testicular Cancer can sometimes be. STOP - DO YOU KNOW WHAT A BENIGN TUMOR IS?

A benign tumor is a tumor that lacks all three of the malignant properties of a cancer. Thus, by definition, a benign tumor does not grow in an unlimited, aggressive manner, does not invade surrounding tissues, and does not metastasize. Common examples of benign tumors include moles and uterine fibroids.

Cancer (medical term: malignant neoplasm) is a class of diseases in which a group of cells display uncontrolled growth (division beyond the normal limits), invasion (intrusion on and destruction of adjacent tissues), and sometimes metastasis (spread to other locations in the body via lymph or blood). These three malignant properties of cancers differentiate them from benign tumors, which are self-limited, do not invade or metastasize. Most cancers form a tumor but some, like leukemia, do not. The branch of medicine concerned with the study, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer is oncology.

Cancer may affect people at all ages, even fetuses, but the risk for most varieties increases with age.[1] Cancer causes about 13% of all deaths.[2] According to the American Cancer Society, 7.6 million people died from cancer in the world during 2007.[3] Cancers can affect all animals.

Nearly all cancers are caused by abnormalities in the genetic material of the transformed cells. These abnormalities may be due to the effects of carcinogens, such as tobacco smoke, radiation, chemicals, or infectious agents. Other cancer-promoting genetic abnormalities may be randomly acquired through errors in DNA replication, or are inherited, and thus present in all cells from birth. The heritability of cancers are usually affected by complex interactions between carcinogens and the host's genome. New aspects of the genetics of cancer pathogenesis, such as DNA methylation, and microRNAs are increasingly recognized as important.

So, can writing or reading be a form of Therapy? - who knows? what I do know is Poetry and Writing have made hard times that much easier. Words can comfort, they always have and they always will. Mostly, we live our lives through books, whether we know it or not. If we have religious beliefs we more than likely got them from a Book. If we went to college or University, we learnt almost all we know from a book. Words are very powerful, especially when we are looking for a deep comfort or understanding, that is why Cancer Poems will work. Because words are a huge part of it. It is comfort and wisdom through words when people need that the most.

Because most prostate cancers are slow growing and many occur in older men, they may not be a threat to life. A man may therefore have this cancer, but it may not cause him any trouble.

If prostate cancer is detected and treated before it spreads beyond the prostate, it can be cured. Surgery which removes the whole prostate, or radiotherapy which destroys the cancer, can cure it.

The PSA test (explained below) can indicate prostate cancer at an early stage. If prostate cancer is detected after it has extended beyond the prostate area it can be slowed down by hormone treatments, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

BLADDER CANCER
Cancer that forms in tissues of the bladder (the organ that stores urine). Most bladder cancers are transitional cell carcinomas (cancer that begins in cells that normally make up the inner lining of the bladder). Other types include squamous cell carcinoma (cancer that begins in thin, flat cells) and adenocarcinoma (cancer that begins in cells that make and release mucus and other fluids). The cells that form squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma develop in the inner lining of the bladder as a result of chronic irritation and inflammation.
